Wild Earth Gathering: Gettin' Right With God

The summer’s heat is reminiscent to this former Southern Baptist of a hot night under a crowded tent. A worked-up evangelist reminds a sweating crowd, busily cooling themselves with cardboard fans, exactly why we’re there: we have gone ASTRAY and IT IS TIME to GET RIGHT WITH GOD.

What this phrase meant to me years ago and what it means to me now are completely different. The order to “get right with God” comes ripe with someone else’s understanding of what defines “right” and what defines “God.” It’s taken years to deconstruct that “small G-d” and re-build relationship with a Presence that hints and nudges when I’m drifting from an orientation of the soul. I know to pay attention to and honor those nudges.

The work of my mini-sabbatical this August - realigning with what really matters – is how I interpret “gettin’ right with God” now. This time apart has qualitatively deepened my compassion and faith. It’s a constant realignment, of course, needed more at some times than at others. It was very much needed at this time. Resting in Great Spirit has renewed my strength to get back into this high-strung world while keeping one foot in the realm of Great Presence.
